Omeo

Omeo, Victoria

Gold was discovered around Omeo, in the mid-1800s, attracting European and Chinese gold seekers and became known as Australia's most lawless goldfield. Settled in 1863, the main street is lined with heritage buildings, many of which have interpretive signage.

In the middle of town the historic Justice Precinct with its well preserved buildings and memorabilia are well worth a visit. Or stop at the Oriental Claims which in its day was one of the largest gold-sluicing operations in the world. Today many of the mining remnanats, caves and mining sites can be viewed along short walks around the Claims.
